But P.I. and B&E specialist Ronnie Ventana had gone ahead and done the job - for cash - testing the security system of a house in Presidio Heights. She got into the house, all right. But it was a house with a dead senator in the upstairs bathroom.
When Ronnie discovers that the woman who hired her was a fake - and has now vanished - her only hope is the senator's retarded grandson. He was at the scene of the murder too. But someone has snatched the boy and sent Ronnie into a labyrinth of false identities and buried motives from the Tenderloin the Hall of Justice.
Hidden in this not very pretty picture is one person with a fierce grudge - and one way out of the prefect frame....
Nicht zum ersten Mal gelingt es der Autorin, ihre lockere und amüsante Schreibe zu verbinden mit knallharter Spannung und Action und dabei dennoch Gefühle nicht zu kurz kommen zu lassen. Vor allem dann, wenn die Motive für eine Tat so vielschichtig dargestellt werden, daß der Betrachter zuweilen fast Verständnis für den Täter aufbringen kann.
Besonders "würzig" sind jene Stellen, an denen ehemalige Gangster-"Kollegen" von Ronnies verstorbenen Eltern, ihres Zeichens Juwelendiebe der Extraklasse, der hija de Francisco Ventana', die ja eigentlich auf der Seite des Gesetzes steht, zur Hand gehen.
